Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals: Celebrating six years of K2

Earlier this month marked six years since Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals first went live with Athena and Guardian. It’s been an incredible journey that we feel privileged to have been part of! We caught up with the team to find out what they have to say about the past six years and what hopes they hold for the future.

Six years ago today, our Trust led the way in being the first to implement the full end-to-end maternity system, K2.  This enabled our Maternity Service to go paperless by moving all documentation to the K2 Systems, Athena and Guardian, as the new electronic Patient Health Record (ePHR).

All of our antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal documentation was entered safely and securely onto the new system from the referral to booking stage out in the community, right the way through to when a woman is discharged to Health Visitor care. Moving to the K2MS meant that any clinician in the community or hospital has real-time access to all documentation for community, outpatient and inpatient care.  It also gave the woman online access to her maternity care record. In all, this has improved the way we work.

The system is continuously updated and improved in line with national and local guidance, which has enabled us to deliver initiatives such as ‘Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle’, ‘Continuity of Carer’ and meet national requirements.  The system was recently enhanced further with the introduction of new interactive online ‘My Pregnancy Notes’ for the woman.  Through this new system the woman can now self-refer to our Maternity Service and instantly have access to approved up to date evidence-based health advice and information, and add her own personalised care plans for her pregnancy, labour and postnatal journey.
